I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from North Texas State University majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. Upon graduation I worked in the private sector at various laboratories. I later returned to school and obtained my secondary teaching certificate. I taught high school science for five years. Most recently, I received my elementary certification and have been teaching the science lab class since its inception at Phillips Elementary. Linda Phillips - Reading Coach Acceleration Lab Click the image to enlarge Beverly Whitehead & Marisa Solomon The Acceleration Lab at Phillips this year is a team-teaching classroom. Mrs. Beverly Whitehead and Mrs. Marisa Solomon provide tutoring help in both reading and math for third, and forth grade students. Students come to the Lab two, three, or five days a week. Classes are limited to not more than ten students at a time in order to give more individual help. In addition to mini lessons on Math or Reading TAKS objectives, an ongoing program is in place. Read Naturally is a self-paced taped reading program designed to increase both fluency and comprehension in Reading. Every effort is made to tailor learning to the gaps the children have in these subjects. Classroom teachers keep track of progress through Benchmark testing during the year. Students may be added or deleted from the Acceleration Lab according to progress shown on these Benchmark tests. Lab teachers try to use many different strategies in order to help all students. A tutoring atmosphere prevails. A small class allows teaching to be more hands-on than might be possible in a regular classroom. While this is serious learning, efforts are made to add fun to the Lab. As well as the Acceleration Lab, these teachers also provide Scientific Learning's Fast ForWord lab, a computer program geared to better prepare students for learning.
