Kaufman ISD Profile
Kaufman, Texas, the county seat of Kaufman County, is located 32 miles east of downtown Dallas on Highway 175, bordering the counties of Dallas, Ellis, Henderson, Hunt, Van Zandt and Rockwall. The population of Kaufman itself is approximately 6,000, but many small communities such as Ola, Rand, Jiba and Oak Grove, which facilitate and support the schools, surround it. Most residents of Kaufman are commuters and travel to Metroplex work places every day.
The Kaufman Independent School district is the second largest district in the county, with approximately 3,500 students, comprising seven campuses: Helen Edwards Early Childhood Center, J. W. Monday Primary, J. R. Phillips Elementary, Lucille Nash Intermediate, O. P. Norman Jr. High, Kaufman High School and the Kaufman Alternative Learning Center.
Kaufman ISD began a concerted, long range effort to improve facilities, equipment, technology and professional development in order to provide a diverse and growing student population with the same quality of educational preparation that is offered to students in the most favorable circumstances across the state and nation. Efforts have paid off! KISD test scores have consistently risen and remained above state average. The district has adopted the motto "Exemplary - One Student at a Time!"
Kaufman ISD is a large AAA district, offering a wide range of extra curricular activities. KISD has been the district academic champion for 13 times in the past 20 years. KISD consistently participates in post-season play in all areas of athletic competition, including football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, track and tennis. The KISD band program is outstanding and continues to win awards. Students in various activities have successfully represented KISD at regional and state meets.
The most recent Kaufman ISD building program was completed in the summer of 2004. KISD completed construction of the new outstanding Helen Edwards Early Childhood Center, new lecture hall, classroom addition, and office renovation at the Nash Intermediate School, a new entrance at Phillips Elementary School, a new gym at Norman Jr. High School, new entrance and classrooms at Kaufman High School, and a new service center for Support Services. Renovation and additions to the KISD Administration Building were also completed and now house the KISD Business Office, Special Populations Department and a new Board Room.
KISD Scholarship Foundation
The Kaufman Independent School District was established the Kaufman ISD Scholarship Foundation in August 1999 with a gift from Bob and Marla Gail Dean to endow the Marla Gail Dean Scholarship. Returns on this investment as well as other donations since then are used by the Foundation to provide college scholarships to Kaufman High School seniors. Since only the interest income earned from donations is spent on scholarships, gifts to the foundation enable Kaufman ISD graduates now and into the future.
Every spring scholarships are awarded to KHS seniors from various individuals and companies. The foundation only enhances the opportunity for every KHS senior who has a desire to attend college to make that dream a reality. It is the long-term goal of the KISD Scholarship Foundation that every Kaufman High School senior receives a scholarship to start them out in their college career.
Benefactors of $1,000 or more to the KISD Scholarship Foundation are recognized with the placement of their name on a permanent plaque displayed on the “Wall of Honor” at Kaufman High School. Donations of $10,000 or more to the KISD Scholarship Foundation are recognized with an individual plaque and benefactors are given the opportunity to name their scholarship.
Continuing scholarships now funded through donations to the foundation include the Marla Gail Dean Scholarship, the James and Donna Beth Thompson Scholarship, the Dr. Bobbie Morrow Dietrich Scholarship, the Tinnan Sisters Scholarship, the Robert Wisdom Music Scholarship, the Jimmy Phillips/Lions Club Memorial Scholarship, the Coca Cola Bottling Company of North Texas Scholarship, the Lockerd Foundation Scholarship, and the KISD General Fund Scholarship.
The foundation provides for donations in any amount to be combined with larger ones, giving everyone an opportunity to participate. Gifts of any amount are greatly appreciated and will be included in the General Fund Scholarship.
Donations made in honor or memory of someone will be recognized on a memorial plaque on the “Wall of Honor” and a card sent to the individual, or the individual’s family acknowledging the memorial.

KISD Comprehensive School Security Plan
Kaufman Independent School District has a comprehensive school security plan. Kaufman ISD has recently had a security audit from the Center for Safe and Secure Schools. Kaufman ISD has an Emergency Operations Plan in place and was assisted by Region 10 Educational Service Center. Kaufman ISD uses video surveillance at its campuses.
Kaufman ISD has its own police department with four full-time officers. All KISD officers are commissioned and licensed police officers within the state of Texas. Staff and student training are continuous throughout the school year. Classroom teachers are trained in school safety by campus administrators and the KISD Police Department.
Kaufman ISD has a safe school hotline. The Safe School Helpline is used to report threats of violence, suicide and illegal activity that could harm students in our schools. All information is anonymous. Students or parents can call anytime day or night, or submit a report using the internet at www.safeschoolhelpline.com. Security Voice reports the message to school administrators. This service also offers community counseling services and a crisis center that provides 24 hour a day crisis intervention services. Their toll free number is 1-800-418-6423, ext. 359.
Kaufman ISD strives to ensure a safe learning environment for all students. Student and staff safety are top priorities at Kaufman ISD.
