As a part of comprehensive preschool and school health programming set forth by the Department of State Health Services, various screenings are conducted on the students aimed at detecting problems which could limit the child's educational opportunities.
- Vision and hearing checks - vision and hearing checks - children 4 years old by September 1, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th require vision and hearing screenings.
- Acanthosis Nigricans screening - Acanthosis Nigricans Screening - school nurses screen for Acanthosis Nigricans, a risk factor or insulin resistance. Positive markers for Acanthosis Nigricans are dark pigmentation across the back of the neck. Grades 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th are screened for this.
- Spinal screening - Spinal Screening nurses will screen at the same time they examine students for Acanthosis Nigrican.

ONLY MEDICATION WHICH IS REQUIRED TO ENABLE A STUDENT TO REMAIN IN SCHOOL WILL BE GIVEN UNDER THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:
- Whenever possible, please give medication at home. "Three times a day" could be given before school, after school, and at bedtime.
- Medication must be in the original, properly labeled containers, clearly listing the name of the medication, dosage, instructions, and date prescribed.
- Medications sent in baggies or unlabeled containers will not be given.
- Medications will not be given without a specific written request by at least one parent or legal guardian and a physician. Changes in medication will require new and updated forms. Forms must be updated every year.
A NEW SCHOOL YEAR MEANS NEW FORMS WILL BE NECESSARY!
- All medications must be kept in the nurse's office except for students whose doctor requires them to carry an inhaler/diabetic supplies on their person, provided all paperwork has been turned in. These are still considered medications and must have doctor's orders to cover them.
- If a student allows another student to use the inhaler/diabetic supplies, the privilege will be revoked.
- It is recommended that medications be brought to school by the student's parent/guardian.
- Empty medication containers will be returned to the student when the container is empty. If any over-the-counter medication is needed it must be brought to the school nurse, in the original container. NO EXCEPTIONS. Child's name should be on the container.
- No medication of any kind will be given to any student who does not have his or her own medication in the nurse's office.
- No sharing of medication will be allowed.
- Medication will not be given without a specific request signed by at least a parent or legal guardian.
- All medications must be kept in the nurse's office.
- It is recommended that medications be brought to school by the parent or guardian versus the student.
