On Saturday, September 25, 2010, the citizens of Kaufman Independent School District will be asked to vote in a school district Tax Ratification Election (TRE), which will provide additional dollars for daily maintenance and operations of the district. What is a TRE Election? State law now requires school districts to hold a Tax Ratification Election (TRE) in order to approve any tax rate that is above $1.04 for maintennce and operations. The TRE Election will allow KISD to increase taxes for maintenance and operations up to .13 cents.
The ballot shows an increase in my taxes. Does this mean my taxes will increase? NO
A school district is required to adopt a budget for maintnece & operations and another budget for debt. The KISD Board has legally pledged to use the .13 cent increase from TRE election to decrease budgeted debt by .13 cents. So, the net increase in the total tax rate will be $0.
