Kaufman Pre K students are provided learning experiences that meet children’s needs and stimulate learning in all developmental areas; physical, social, emotional and intellectual. Teachers prepare the environment for children to learn through active exploration and interaction with adults, other children, and materials.
Children are provided many opportunities to see how reading and writing are useful before they are instructed in letter names, sounds, and word identification. Basic skills develop when they are meaningful to children.
- Preschool programs for Children with
Disabilities (PPCD) –
an Early
Childhood program for children who exhibit one or more
delays in areas such as speech, emotional, physical, or cognitive
development. The Special Education Department must assess the student.
The Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) committee develops the
Individual Education Program and determines the length of the school
day. Students with impairments are educated in an inclusive program
with our Pre-Kindergarten and Head Start students.

Our Kindergarten program at Helen Edwards is a balance between academics and guided play. The children learn reading skills through active participation in early literacy activities. We teach math using manipulatives in a variety of ways and other subject areas are integrated within the reading and math programs. In addition to academics, students are taught social skills throughout the year, which helps them to learn effectively.
- Kindergarten

Kindergarten a child must be five years old as of September 1. Basic
